Project & canvas

Mobile preview uses reduced resolution and a 1× layout by default. Your project resolution and export quality are preserved. Large media and exports still depend on your browser and device memory.

Edit & timeline

Tap a clip to select it. Scroll mode lets you swipe the timeline; Move mode lets you drag clips and their trim edges. Enable Multi-select to tap several clips. Use the inspector for exact timing and lane placement.

Audio & beat markers

Analyze the selected audio/video clip locally. Waveforms appear inside timeline clips. Detected beats are estimates; you can add a regular BPM grid instead.

Captions

Import subtitles as editable text clips on a dedicated lane. Export uses caption clips, or selected text clips if there are no caption clips.

Optional on-device automatic captions

Transcribe the selected audio/video clip in English with Whisper Tiny English. Recognition runs on your device. Downloading the model needs internet the first time (roughly 45 MB, plus the bundled recognition runtime on first use); your audio is never uploaded. CPU inference can take several minutes. Maximum 15 minutes per clip.

No local model folder selected. A model download requires the toggle below.

CLIP TRANSITION

Transition

Creates an overlap and shifts following clips on this lane earlier. Undo restores the previous timing.

THE FINAL CUT

Render on your device.

First we capture your timeline in real time, then encode it locally using FFmpeg WebAssembly. Keep this tab visible. Your media is never uploaded.

Local encoding is memory intensive. Start with shorter 720p projects. Auto prefers frame-by-frame WebCodecs export, using hardware acceleration when available. Compatibility export records real-time playback; overloaded devices can drop frames. The bundled encoder (~31 MB) loads only when you export. MKV downloads may need a player such as VLC.

Ready to render.

REFRAME YOUR SHOT

Drag to choose a crop.

The crop uses source pixels. Apply it, then use Fit or Fill in the inspector.

LOCAL VIDEO EDITOR / QUICK START

Your edit, from start to finish.

  1. On phones, the bottom bar opens Media, Edit, Inspector, and Projects. The top menu contains canvas size, project saving, backups, and commands. Scroll mode lets you swipe the timeline; tap a clip to select it. Switch to Move to drag clips or trim edges. Multi-select replaces Shift-click; turn it off to drag the selection. Edit provides lane up/down controls and Move linked clips when you need to reposition an incoming transition clip. Landscape places the preview beside the timeline. Mobile preview is quarter resolution and at most 24 fps; export keeps the project resolution. Browser codec support and device memory still affect import/export, especially for long or 4K projects. Keep the app visible during compatibility export.
  2. Use the visible Copy, Cut, and Paste buttons above the timeline for one clip or every selected/grouped clip. Paste inserts at the playhead. For animation, select a clip and press + ◆ Key, change its transform/effect/audio values, seek to another time, then change values again. Adding or selecting a key turns Animate edits on. Click a diamond to edit that exact pose, use Previous/Next or a numeric clip time to navigate, and choose easing from each key to the next. Animation opens these controls on mobile; the timeline action buttons stay visible. Use Shapes in the media library to create colored squares, rectangles, triangles, arrows, circles, or custom drawings as transparent PNG assets. Add an outline or draw multiple colors, then save to the library and drag onto a video lane. Click a selected clip again to deselect it; dragging keeps it selected. Select a visual clip and hover over it to reveal ↻ above it. Drag that button around the clip center to rotate. Preview snap enables 30-degree rotation steps; turn it off for free rotation, or hold Alt to temporarily bypass snapping. Double-click the rotation button to reset the selected clip to 0°. Touch users see the rotation button whenever a visual clip is selected. Pinch with two fingers in the preview to scale selected visual clips proportionally, twist to rotate, or move both fingers to reposition them. Two-finger rotation follows Preview snap’s 30-degree steps. Undo restores the previous size. The Timeline zoom slider remains above the tracks on desktop and mobile. Pinch the timeline with two fingers to zoom around the time under your fingers; swipe with one finger to scroll. The inspector provides exact rotation values and keyframes. Escape cancels and Undo restores the previous rotation.
  3. Projects on the left lets you create and switch projects without clearing the previous one. Minimize it with ☰. Delete a project with its × button; media used by another project is retained. Back up with media downloads a portable .dinnerbackup including originals, custom fonts, and proxies; Restore backup opens it as a new project. Browser storage can be cleared or evicted, so keep downloaded backups.
  4. Open Proxy editing in the library and create 540p copies for lighter playback. Toggle proxy preview as needed. Exports use the full-resolution originals or full-resolution compatibility conversions. Generating proxies is local and may take time; Cancel keeps completed copies.
  5. Visual clips cannot overlap on one video lane without an explicit transition. Invalid moves/trims show a red placement preview and are cancelled on release. Library drops and duplicates use the next free space; pastes use a new lane when needed. Use separate lanes for overlays.
  6. Add several videos, images, or audio files. Drag media from the library onto a compatible lane at the desired time, or use Append / Overlay. Switch the library between list and grid views using its header buttons.
  7. Select a clip. Drag it along its track to reposition it, drag its edges to trim, or press S to split at the playhead.
  8. Video lanes above others appear on top. Use the lane selector in the inspector, or drag a clip to another compatible lane. Add video or audio lanes with the timeline buttons; clone, mute, lock, or remove lanes from their headers. Double-click a lane name to rename it. Drag its grip above or below another lane to change stacking order; Alt + Up/Down on the grip works from the keyboard. Drag visual clips in the preview to move them, or use the corner handle to resize.
  9. Click the + button between touching visual clips on a lane to add a transition directly. Click ⋈ to edit an existing transition. Drag a linked incoming clip horizontally, its left trim edge, or the outgoing clip’s right edge to change the overlap duration. Shift rounds to 0.1 seconds; Esc cancels. Hold Alt to move a linked clip normally. You can also select the incoming visual clip and use Transition from previous clip in the inspector. Choose dissolve, wipe, slide, or zoom fade, set the duration, and Apply. The clips must touch or overlap on one lane. Applying shifts this clip and later clips on the lane earlier to create the overlap; audio crossfades too. Transition duration has no fixed seconds cap and can use the available clip lengths; neighboring transitions must fit. Removing an effect closes its overlap; Undo restores the previous timing.
  10. Text clips offer style tiles, outlines, glow, italic, and line-height controls. Text Animation adds entrance, exit, and looping effects with duration, easing, and intensity. Save custom style + animation creates a reusable preset on this device. All effects render in preview, MP4/MKV exports, and the downloadable local version.
  11. Use Crop for a visual source crop; Fit and Fill set framing. Adjust rotation, flips, opacity, color filters, fades, and volume.
  12. Add titles with bundled DejaVu Sans, Serif, or Mono, or import your own font. Fonts and all effects are baked into the exported picture.
  13. Edits and media autosave in this browser when storage is available. Save project downloads editing instructions; keep your original media and fonts to relink after reopening on another browser.
  14. Export MP4 or MKV. Capture runs in real time, then the local encoder creates the final file. Cancellation frees the encoder worker.
  15. Shift-click or Ctrl/⌘-click clips to select multiple clips. Ctrl/⌘ A selects all unlocked clips. Group with Ctrl/⌘ G; ungroup with Ctrl/⌘ Shift G. Dragging moves selected clips together with live placement ghosts; dragging in the preview transforms selected visual clips together. Compatible appearance fields, masks, and chroma-key changes apply to the selection. Trimming acts on the clip whose edge you drag.
  16. Copy, cut, and paste clips with Ctrl/⌘ C, X, and V or the timeline buttons. Paste inserts at the playhead into the selected compatible lane when space permits; occupied or locked lanes fall back to a new lane. Ctrl/⌘ Shift V always creates new lanes. Multi-lane selections keep their lane separation, spacing, groups, and internal transitions. Settings includes a timeline lane-height slider. Text-field clipboard shortcuts continue to edit text normally. Duplicate handles the whole selection.
  17. Preview snap and Timeline snap are separate toggles, both enabled by default and also available in Settings. Preview guides align edges/centers to the canvas and other visible clips; hold Alt while transforming to bypass snapping. Timeline snapping includes clip boundaries and beat/marker positions.
  18. Use Waveform / beats to analyze the selected audio/video clip locally, detect approximate beats, add a BPM grid, or add markers at the playhead. Audio files under 100 MB analyze automatically. Alt-click a marker to remove it. Media size in the library changes both list and grid density.
  19. Captions imports SRT or WebVTT as editable text clips, and exports caption clips back to SRT/VTT. Optional English automatic captions use Whisper Tiny English on your device; enable the model-download toggle or choose a downloaded model folder with config/tokenizer files and quantized ONNX encoder/merged-decoder files. Audio is not uploaded. Review recognition results.
  20. Masks & Chroma Key supports rectangular, rounded, ellipse, and diamond masks with inversion, plus custom-color keying, similarity, softness, and spill suppression. GPU keying is used when available.
  21. Auto export prefers WebCodecs frame-by-frame rendering and native H.264/AAC encoding, with hardware acceleration where supported. Compatibility export remains available for unsupported codecs/devices and records real-time playback before local encoding. Large projects still require sufficient device memory.
  22. Drag the dividers to resize panels. The page stays locked; each panel and timeline scroll independently. Settings control theme, interface scale, font size, transparency, preview quality, autosave, preview clip panning/rotation sensitivity, and timeline panning sensitivity (100% by default). Middle-drag the timeline to pan; wheel, trackpad, and touch panning honor timeline sensitivity. The default font size is 16px. The new 100% interface scale uses the former 120% size as its baseline. Settings can export and import local preferences, including panel layout and library view. Use Ctrl/⌘ K for commands.
  23. Use Download Local Version (HTML) in Settings or the command bar to download the entire website as a ZIP. Extract it, keep the dinnerplate folder together, and open index.html for offline navigation and tools, including the video encoder. No installation is needed to open the HTML pages. If your browser restricts file-based storage or device permissions, use the included localhost launcher (Python 3 required). The download does not include your projects, imported media, or settings; save projects and export settings separately.
  24. For animation, select a clip and add a key at the playhead. Enable Auto key, move the playhead, and change position, size, rotation, opacity, color adjustments, or volume. Choose linear, ease-in, ease-out, ease-in-out, or hold per key.
  25. Canvas includes 4K UHD and custom even dimensions up to 4096 × 4096. Half or quarter preview resolution reduces work without reducing export resolution.

JPEG/JPG and PNG import directly. HEIC/HEIF uses a bundled local decoder (the first image becomes a still). MOV and other video files that need conversion are normalized locally for browser playback. MP3 and WAV go into audio lanes. Speed changes audio pitch. Stills default to five seconds. Device storage and memory limits apply; this editor has no server fallback.
